Switching to Google Apps
August 08, 2008 in google, admin

Me and my friend Michael Hendrickx decided to switch to Google Apps today for handling our e-mail.

Up until now we've been running our own server with a Postfix + Dovecot + Spamassassin + Squirrelmail configuration, but it's getting harder to maintain and Google's antispam engine is really good. Ok I hear you guys out there "yeah and so is their spy-engine!". True, Google does scan our content to give us targetted advertising. Personally I like that a lot more than receiving huge amounts of medicine advertisements in my mailbox.

Besides a way around this would be to use PKI to encrypt the e-mail. Something we should do all the time. Forget Google, anyone out there on the Internet can read your e-mail. What about the people hosting your server on which you're running your Postfix? They can have access to your e-mail if they want to.

I've been really happy with Google apps in the past. A few small companies and startups I know are using it because it's free and reliable. So today we made the switch as well.

note to self: configure tinymce to allow adding hyperlinks and stuff! :)
